The York Makery was born because we wanted to share with others the joy of creating; the absolute pleasure that comes in announcing to admirers – “I made that!”. We run classes which focus on friendliness and inclusivity, always in the belief that absolutely everyone has something to gain from learning a new skill. We offer parties for children and adults which are accessible for all abilities, making it fun to experience new crafts with any group of friends, relatives or work colleagues. We curate our selection of craft supplies with an eye for the colourful and modern, to inspire your crafting, and spark that happy feeling of creative possibilities in your tummy.
The York Makery has recently taken a Pledge On Plastics! Find out more in this blog post <Coming soon!>
Hi I’m Kayleigh! I moved to York in 2015, away from the hustle and bustle of a secondary school teaching job in South London. I’ve always been crafty and creative, and as a qualified Design & Technology teacher, I wanted to find a way outside the formal teaching career route to share my skills with others. In April 2016 we took the keys for a shop unit on Gillygate in York, and after two weeks of mad furniture building and attempts at DIY, we opened our doors for the first time on 30th April 2016. This is my first business, so it has been a steep learning curve, but I’m proud of what we have created, how we have evolved with demand, and how many people have left us delighted with their new hobbies.

George is a ruby King Charles Cavalier spaniel who comes to work in The York Makery. He is almost 1 year old now, and despite Kayleigh’s best efforts, has made no progress to date in his Till Training. If you pop in and visit us, you’ll often find him spying at you from behind the counter – he is friendly, cute, soft, fluffy, and a total menace to anything woolly. Puppy cuddles are currently free of charge.
